PCR swab test for COVID-19 antigen occupational health
This is the test used by the NHS to check for the presence of the COVID-19 virus antigen in a sample taken from the nose or throat. OH3 staff can conduct this testing from our clinics or from business premises at present and costs are reduced for larger numbers of workers.
The PCR test can tell if you currently are positive for COVID-19 as this may mean you could be infectious to others.
Every test has its limitations and even if you are found to be negative for the COVID-19 antigen today, it does mean you won’t become infected tomorrow or next week. Even a positive test may not mean you are actively infectious as the test cannot tell if this is live virus which could make you infectious or inactivated virus fragments which are probably not infectious.
With all that said, this is the test the NHS and UK government has used from the start of the pandemic.
Antibody blood test for COVID-19 occupational health
This is a blood test performed by one of our health professional staff, taking a sample of your blood from a vein in your arm. This test measures if you have developed any antibodies to the virus and becomes more accurate 14-28 days after you develop symptoms of COVID-19. People have this test to find out if they suffered from COVID-19 at some point in the past few weeks.
There is only one kit fully approved by Public Health England which is the Roche test and it is only approved if a sample is taken by a health professional. As of today 30th June, the home use antibody kits are NOT approved and are discouraged when performed with a skin prick.
Manufacturer tests found this test was 98-100% accurate which is why it achieved approval. It is the only kit OH3 will offer at this time, until others are approved.
It is important to remember that each test has some limitations. If this test is positive for antibodies, and you would expect this would give you some degree of immunity, we do not know yet if that is the case or if it does give some protection or how long any protection would last. The advice would still be for you to follow government guidelines at all stages, watching closely as updates to official advice are regularly changing, sometimes on a daily basis.
