COVID-19 Testing Occupational Health

OH3 - Your Trusted Occupational Health Provider

COVID-19 Coronavirus Testing

COVID-19 PCR and antibody tests for employees not covered by NHS testing criteria

We are offering two types of test to be used for those requiring these in an occupational setting which employers can use for their workforce or employees can use for themselves. The PCR throat and nose swab test can be used in order to demonstrate that an employee is currently showing as negative for COVID-19 at the time of testing. We are also providing blood antibody testing, which will determine if you have previously been infected with coronavirus COVID-19 in the past few weeks.

The testing that we are carrying out at OH3 is designed for employees who require tests for employment but may not at present meet the criteria for NHS testing services. It may be useful for some offshore workers, seafarers, or other workers requiring to fly to other countries.

It is very important to understand that if you are currently showing symptoms for coronavirus (COVID-19) then you should not book a test with us. If you are presently demonstrating symptoms of a high temperature, a new continuous cough or a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste then you must stay at home and self-isolate. You must not leave your home and have no visitors, anyone you live with or is in your support bubble must also self-isolate.

If you are experiencing these symptoms then you should consult the link below, which will take you to the NHS coronavirus (COVID-19) information:

PCR swab test for COVID-19 antigen

This is the test used by the NHS to check for the presence of the COVID-19 virus antigen in a sample taken from the nose or throat. OH3 staff can conduct this testing from our clinics or from business premises at present and costs are reduced for larger numbers of workers.

The PCR test can tell if you currently are positive for COVID-19 as this may mean you could be infectious to others.

Every test has its limitations and even if you are found to be negative for the COVID-19 antigen today, it does mean you won’t become infected tomorrow or next week. Even a positive test may not mean you are actively infectious as the test cannot tell if this is live virus which could make you infectious or inactivated virus fragments which are probably not infectious.

With all that said, this is the test the NHS and UK government has used from the start of the pandemic.

Antibody blood test for COVID-19

This is a blood test performed by one of our health professional staff, taking a sample of your blood from a vein in your arm. This test measures if you have developed any antibodies to the virus and becomes more accurate 14-28 days after you develop symptoms of COVID-19. People have this test to find out if they suffered from COVID-19 at some point in the past few weeks.

There is only one kit fully approved by Public Health England which is the Roche test and it is only approved if a sample is taken by a health professional. As of today 30th June, the home use antibody kits are NOT approved and are discouraged when performed with a skin prick.

Manufacturer tests found this test was 98-100% accurate which is why it achieved approval. It is the only kit OH3 will offer at this time, until others are approved.

It is important to remember that each test has some limitations. If this test is positive for antibodies, and you would expect this would give you some degree of immunity, we do not know yet if that is the case or if it does give some protection or how long any protection would last. The advice would still be for you to follow government guidelines at all stages, watching closely as updates to official advice are regularly changing, sometimes on a daily basis.

If you are presenting COVID-19 symptoms

You should not book a test with us if you have any symptoms which could possibly be indicative of a current COVID-19 infection, such as a cough, fever or loss of taste or smell. You should follow the UK government guidelines in this case, which at 30 June 2020 mean you should book a test through the NHS website. You will not have to pay for this test. Our testing at OH3 Ltd is designed for employees who are not covered by the NHS testing system, but require testing for work purposes.

Discounts for multiple employees*

Reductions for multiple tests for employers are volume dependent and can be up to 25% for over 100 tests. These discounts are based on economies of scale and are designed for companies testing their entire workforce, with discounts applying to both types of test.
